Perspectives 2004: CCNA 85th
National Convention
co-hosted by the Ontario Community Newspapers Association
Hilton Lac Leamy,
Gatineau, QC, National Capital Region
This June, the entire community newspaper industry in Canada
will be meeting in the same place at the same time. For the first time in the
long history of the Canadian Community Newspapers
Association (CCNA) and its Quebec-based French-language counterpart, Les
Hebdos du Québec, the two associations will be holding their annual
conventions simultaneously. This historic event will also see the participation
of the Association de la presse francophone (APF).
Planned joint events symbolize the efforts of these associations to build a partnership
of strength in unity.
In 2004, CCNA's 85th national convention and Les Hebdos' 72nd
annual convention will be held at the Hilton
Lac Leamy, Gatineau, Québec in the national capital region. The theme
of both conventions is "Perspectives." The CCNA convention will be held
June 3-5, 2004 with joint bilingual events being held on June 4 and 5.
A federation of seven regional newspaper associations, CCNA
was founded in 1919 as the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association (CWNA), and
held its first convention in 1920. Just over a decade later in 1932, Les Hebdos
was formed under the name Les hebdomadaires de langue française du Canada,
and held its first convention in 1933.
Today, the CCNA represents a membership of more than 700 community
newspapers, which are primarily English-language publications. Les Hebdos du Québec
represents 140 French and bilingual papers in Quebec. More information on the
APF can be found at www.apf.ca.
