Judge's Comments
I was very impressed with some of the entries and very disappointed with many others. Under the theme, I wanted to see something unique. For the most part I didn't find what I was looking for - many submitted special anniversaries, fire and oil field supplements. I also expected quality writing and while some were, others had little or no editorial content. Layout, in many, could be improved. I wanted the sections to look different than the regular paper.
The Minden Times' WestNile virus supplement was easily the most original. The editorial team obviously spent time to create interesting artwork and a clean layout.
The winning entries raised high above the others by putting thought into layout, used quality photographs to the best advantage of the page and searched, far and wide, for interesting and unique supplement opportunities. I know there are a few ideas which truly sparked my imagination.
