Judge's Comments
The game of promotion is critical to any newspaper. Whether it is for advertising, circulation development, general awareness or theme development, good promotions require careful planning and an excellent creative component.
Many of the entries failed to tie these components together, however, the ones that did clearly knew the difference.
The third place Harbour Breton (NL) Coaster is clearly involved with its community. Finding ways to stimulate the younger reader always pays off. Student entries and comments were all published in the newspaper as part of its “Coaster Poster Contest.” Well done!
The Stephenville (NL) Georgian took a very simple idea of promoting a contest around Mother’s Day with its “Queen for a Day” promotion. The promotion was well executed, good graphics and a full page devoted to the winner. Great promotion.
The Stonewall (MB) Argus & Teulon Times took “Fire Prevention Week” to a whole new level to take first place. The four-page section was well laid out with great graphics and good copy. The newspaper needed to find a way of creating a promotion to enhance the turnout during the open house at the Fire Department. The ‘trading cards’ with photos of each firefighter added the extra winning component to this promotion. Brilliant idea! Congratulations. Can’t wait to see the idea rolled out to the RCMP!
