Judge's Comments
This is the category that NOBODY WANTS to win!
All the entries were amusing, and the participants demonstrated a good sense of humour, and the ability to share a chuckle at their own expense. Notably, most of the entries came from rural papers, which to me said more about their down-to-earth sensibilities than about any lack of quality. (As we all know, larger urban and suburban community papers experience plenty of bloopers. The Listowel (ON) Banner takes first for a simple slip of the keyboard that resulted in a cutline for a photo that had a boy emerging from a Canada day celebrations "DUNG" Tank. The photograph helped create the amusing image.
The Spruce Grove (AB) Examiner gets second for an industrial business meeting notice that would be "HOSED" by the local Chamber of Commerce and the city. The missing "t" radically altered the intention, and a wry chuckle resulted.
The High Prairie (AB) South Peace News wins third for a blooper in the body copy of an interesting piece about a local lookout tower operator who grows his own food including potatoes, garlic, lettuce, spinach, and peas in his garden, unfortunately, "peas" is spelled "PEES". Hey, a guy's got to go somewhere.... Well done, blooper entries!
