Judge's Comments

Fresh, interesting approaches to coverage of the arts by the top quarter of the 66 entries in this competition made for some very interesting reading which resulted in some tough choices. Great writing, eye-pleasing layout and relevant community material put the finalists ahead of the pack - but not by much.

It required five hours of reading and to judge this wonderful collection of entries which could have featured an extensive honourable mention listing.

With the arts, the trick to attracting attention is the use of images - excellent images that go beyond the pedestrian row of people handing out trophies or presenting cheques. Readers want to be engaged by the stories and images, and the Whistler Question, Salmon Arm Observer and Nunatsiaq News do the job remarkably.

Each entry in this division was scrutinized for local interest, quality of writing, uniqueness, basis of approach and clarity of presentation.

The winners in this category obviously have fun with their arts pages. If the creators are enjoying the experience then it is likely readers will pick up those vibes and invest the time to take a closer look at the well-crafted writing and carefully-placed images.
