Judge's Comments
A fairly low quality of journalism existed in more than half of the entries for the Best Business Writing Award. Some of the articles amounted to nothing more than public relation exercises. The general level of writing could be much better.
The winning entry by Cathy Carnahan of the Miramichi (NB) Leader demonstrated extraordinary enterprise on behalf of the newspaper and reporter. It doggedly stuck with this issue for weeks.
The Second place entry by Kate Peardon of the Montague (PE) Eastern Graphic was real journalism made possible by an access to information request. Third place was also a courageous effort on the part of the Whitehorse/Yukon Territory (YT) Yukon News and the writing by Richard Mostyn about a possibly dull subject, plywood, really flowed.
