Judge's Comments
Ellen Wise of the Nanton (AB) News wins first place for her tattered, torn desperate steer hung up on a barbed wire fence representing the border between Canada and the United States. With just a quick glance, anyone who followed the news last summer about Mad Cow Disease will understand this cartoon. It's easy to imagine that in the ranching district of Nanton, Alberta, this cartoon would have had a profound impact locally.
Similarly Deke Hammell cartoon showing tree cutting near Jasper must have hit home for readers in that community after forest fires threatened the national parks. Finally, Casey Edge tackled the church and same sex marriages with a cartoon that brought out a belly laugh from the judge. In the end, the decision to pick a winner came down to presentation and how well the cartoonist told a story with just a few quick lines and a quirky approach to life.
